What is more fun than giving things away? (I think I was meant to be a philanthropist. Give Bon Lemon a couple of years.)
We are having another contest: The Furry Friend Contest. Like most of our contests, this one relates to our mantra,
"when life gives you lemons... make lemonade."
The Furry Friend Contest will run from Wednesday, September 22 through Wednesday, September 29. All you have to do is tell us how your furry friend (dog, ferret, rabbit, horse... overly hairy men do not count) has helped you make lemonade. It could be anything from saving your life to licking your feet. Post it on our Facebook page for all the world to see. (Actually, we have less than 300 friends, so you will only be exposing yourself to the equivalent of a high school graduating class. Or the number of people in the US who still own a Hypercolor shirt. Those were so cool!)
An example of The Furry Friend Contest entry:
When I am having a bad day, and I take Dolce Vita Evans for a walk, I get great pleasure seeing the joy he experiences from running around outside. I watch him as he devises the perfect position to pee on the exact leaf of a bush he has his eye on. I envy the enjoyment he feels from breathing air. I learn from his enthusiasm for everything he encounters. Although, sometimes it takes a dog peeing on a bush to remind me, no matter how many lemons come my way, there is always lemonade to be had.
So share your story with us. Tell us how your furry friend has helped you make lemonade. The sappier the better. The winner, as determined by Dolce Vita Evans, the Bon Lemon proprietress, and our board of directors (so really just me), will receive this bunny friendly scarf made from buttery soft angora valued at $48! You can pick black, white or caramel.
Give your furry friend a scratch from Bon Lemon.
P.S. we are on the hunt for Bon Lemon dog collars, but haven't found the right ones. If you have suggestions, we would love to hear them.
In late August 2002 our family was busy packing to take our son to college freshman orientation when the phone rang. Come quickly, our neighbor said, Cain's been hurt.
ReplyDeleteWhile we were all preoccupied with loading the Surburban, our beautiful 4 year old yellow Lab had wandered to a nearby field where a neighbor was cutting hay. The neighbor didn't see Cain approaching from the rear and Cain didn't see the long mower blade slicing through the tall grass.
Cain's right front paw was hanging by a thread and he was losing a lot of blood as we rushed to the vet's office. I fought back tears, sure my beloved dog whom I had adopted just 3 years before, would not live. But the vet reassured us,he would live alright, but complete amputation of his leg would be needed. After the surgery, our normally strong, happy dog was so weak he could barely lift his head. We had to carry him outside to pee. His recovery was long, but eventually, he learned to move the one good front leg to the center of his body, and slowly he regained his balance. Within a year he could run as fast on 3 legs as he once did on four. Now 12, Cain has arthritic hips and barely moves from his dog bed to a favored sunny spot in the grass. But his disability taught our family an important life lesson: do not give up. Cain's example of turning lemons to lemonade continues to inspire us.
Cain and Nancy! Thank you for inspiring us at Bon Lemon.
ReplyDeleteLike Dolce Vita Evans, Rigg-a-toni Lowrance (no, Riggs did not give in and change his name with the marriage) also frequently reminds me to appreciate the simple things in life. Although he suffers from chronic arthritis and bone spurs, Riggs never takes for granted the beauty of the things that surround him. No matter how sore he is, he cannot be calmed on a walk. He runs up one mountain and down the next. Then, just when his bone are beginning to ache and his back legs are starting to drag the ground, we arrive at our favorite spot on the hillside near our home. Riggs sits down, sticks his nose in the air, and appears to absorb the view of the Missoula valley and the fresh scents of fall. Just when I start to think that he is one sophisticated soul, he runs to the pile of turkey poop nearby, rolls his entire body in the poop, and finds the perfect part of a deer carcass to carry home. As I am giving him his third bath of the week and wanting to kill him, I remind myself that if Riggs' achy bones can find such joy rolling in feces, certainly I can find a way to make lemonade out of whatever lemons roll my way.
ReplyDeleteRigg-a-toni... LOVE...
