Oly Rollers

My sister, Wax Job, played on the 2009 World Champion Roller Derby team, the Oly Rollers. My whole family went to Philadelphia to watch the Olympia gals sweep the nation. It was quite the upset, with Gotham City set to take the title again.

In 2010, Wax Job retired to get knocked up. Mission accomplished. This year, she went to the WFTDA National Championships in Chicago with Surly Sioux (another retired Oly Roller) to watch the girls fight for the title again. And fight they did.

The Oly Rollers faced a tough rival, Rocky Mountain Rollergirls, for the championship bout. Both teams play rough, West Coast derby. (The East Coast teams are known for being more technical and less physical, and there are differing opinions on which is the true essence of derby.) But Rocky Mountain and Oly play the same game. They are aggressive. They have world class skaters. And they know how to score points. Oly was in the lead for most of the bout, but Rocky Mountain came back to win it in the end.

I'm sure the girls weren't happy to send the trophy to Colorado, but I think #2 in the world is pretty damn good. Oly's Sassy was MVP. The girls played well. Congrats Oly Rollers! You make us proud.

P.S. That's Wax Job in the picture. Isn't she cute? (I mean fierce. :)
